Citroën Club of North America Member Kim Walter Teaches Class About Citroëns at Pratt

April 25, 2009 by Denis

History of Industrial Design is a class taught annually by Kim Walter at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. To assist in his session on Auto Design, he commandeered assistance from myself, Gert Larsen and Ronnie Kienhuis to bring various cars to the school and show the students some of their features.

I’ve been doing this will Kim in various car combinations for the past five years, but we never had to deal with a rain deluge before. It was a fun change for me to pilot an Ami-full of 6 curious students to the underpass of a nearby highway to show off its features out of the rain. This site, complete with side-lighting, wind and rain added to the surreal mood of the evening. I was glad Ronnie was able to capture some of the evening to share.

Having done this many times before, I find the student questions – and my answers – more interesting through the years. After 30+ years of interest, Citroëns are so integrated in my life that it is wonderful to see it anew from their eyes. It’s amazing to think that some of these kids were born AFTER the last CX left the showroom!

We can only hope that these see-touch-hear-ride sensations we have given them will yield some equally interesting design products for the future.

As Robert suggests, the photo of Kim’s ’59 DS under cover of the overpass is movie set like. At first glance, I thought the amber glow of the 2CV headlights was the result of a campfire!

I second Robert’s hopes for inspiration of new product design, and would like to add my own hopes for, perhaps, one or two new Citroenthusiasts for the fold!
