Citroën Breakfast Club meets in October Sunshine!

October 5, 2009 by Denis

The first Citroën Club of North America breakfast meet of the new season was held on Sunday morning, 4 October 2009 at La Madeleine Restaurant in Rockville, Maryland under a gorgeous blue sky, brilliant sunlight, and perfect temperatures. Absolutely ideal driving conditions brought forth one SM, two 2CVs, and three D series sedans.

The hit of the morning was most certainly a 1973 DS-20 sedan, belonging to our friend and club member Bruce Logan, and recently imported by another friend and club member, Marc Dettori. We had heard about the arrival stateside of this DS for many months, but were at long last treated to seeing it for the first time. It is a very original example of a model never sold in the USA, and as such, has an exquisite patina all its own, and many subtleties in trim different from US specification cars. Bruce has been busily working on it for weeks, painting and detailing it for its breakfast debut. One of the more striking features of the car is an option that was never made available on the USA market cars, driving lamps fared into the lower valance behind Plexiglas lenses. We were delighted to have Bruce share his new car with us, and we look forward to seeing them both regularly!

Bruce Edwards came from Baltimore in his beautiful gray DS Confort, and brought his lovely wife Susan, whom we would like to see more often.  Plans are that next month Bruce and Susan will arrive in both their DS sedans and that in the interim, the black DS will be made ready and Susan will learn to handle the five speed manual transmission in the black Pallas!

Three Citroen D-models.

Rounding out our list of three D models, Ron and Donna Hayes arrived in their spotless ID sedan. Son Michael is aboard ship so was not here to join us this month, but Ron tells us that the January breakfast meet will be attended by all four members of the Hayes family, when son Michael will be back home, and son Matt will be visiting from Europe.

Judy Reiter gave Susan Edwards a test ride in her white Deux Chevaux, and judging by Susan’s response, it would appear that yet another model may one day soon join the Edwards family Citroën collection!

Eric DeWidt and his charming wife Evelyn arrived in a beautiful Blue Celeste Deux Chevaux.  We have come to expect Erik’s cars to be impeccable, and this example was no exception.

Harry Kraemer told us of his having just won an award with his dark blue Lomax at a car show in Baltimore, and his plans to buy an enclosed trailer so that he will be able to move it around safely out of the weather. Now that is one Lomax that found a loving home!

Citroen breakfast.

Robert Robinson arrived in this month’s breakfast’s single SM, and generously gave a ride to a prospective SM owner. Robinson family members were present in full force, with Robert, his brother Paul, Sandrine and Chris Delhez and senior family member, Ariel.

Ariel was in good company, with two other long term Citroën owners, Roger Schneider and Andre LeRoy.

Marc Dettori, ever the diplomat, asked for a short test drive in my 1989 Peugeot 405 “S.” Surrounded by beautiful Citroëns, I took Marc’s request as perhaps the supreme compliment for my 405!

As the car show season winds down, these last opportunities for driving our beloved French cars fades as the leaves begin to fall. We still have a number of opportunities to drive our cars, meet our friends, and enjoy what many car collectors deem to be the most ideal of the seasons.

Be sure to check out the list of upcoming events found elsewhere here on Citbitz and in Citroënthusiast, our club magazine. Referenced in last month’s breakfast meeting report were three such events within an easy day’s drive of the Washington, D.C. area. A general antique and classic car show in Rockville, Maryland, a fun filled weekend in Garrett County, Maryland recommended by Ariel Robinson, and the not to be missed Washington Crossing Park meet hosted by John and Vera Beltrante all offer opportunities for shared fun and the warmth of spirit unique to Citroënistes.

So, make plans now to join us. We look forward to seeing you soon!
